I recently attended a management and leadership program at IIM Ahmedabad focused on decision-making in healthcare.
One key insight stood out for me: while healthcare has changed significantly, many of our ways of thinking and responding have not. Patient expectations, technology, insurance systems, and accountability have evolved — but solutions often rely on outdated mental models.
The program emphasised the importance of correct problem framing, reflective decision-making, and building systems and communication that align with today’s healthcare realities. It reinforced a simple but powerful idea: clinical expertise alone is no longer enough. Leadership, clarity, and thoughtful communication are now essential parts of patient care.
Continuing to learn beyond medicine is critical if we want to deliver healthcare that is ethical, effective, and sustainable.
